snippets from books

Andy accepted the sheriff’s offer to sleep in an empty jail cell and save a little money.  Up from his hard cot at daybreak, he ordered breakfast in a chili joint so small that a dozen customers would have been three too many.  The steak was thick, however, drowned in grease-and-flour gravy and sided by a generous helping of scrambled eggs.  The coffee was strong enough to walk by itself.  That was the way Andy liked it.

Elmer Kelton’s books are timeless; I have to re-read one now and then just to remind myself how very much I enjoy his writing and how we miss him.
